Ruth and Kyle had a Scottish twist to their wedding, a reflection of their relationship, sometimes separated by the Irish sea! Ruth and Kyle had both studied at the same college in Portadown and their friendship later blossomed into an official relationship which saw them tie the knot six years later. Early in 2014 Kyle relocated from Northern Ireland to Scotland for employment reasons while Ruth was still studying at Queen’s University in Belfast so the couple had lots of ‘face time’ dates! Following an invitation from Kyle in late 2014 Ruth travelled to Edinburgh to visit Kyle for what she thought was a ‘Christmas shopping’ trip, but Kyle had another plan! Ruth says “Looking back I should have realised something was going on after Kyle had arranged for me to have my nails done for the weekend away, but totally unawares I enjoyed the perfect day with Kyle, sightseeing in Edinburgh, touring the Castle, having afternoon tea on the Royal Mile and ice skating on Princes Street Gardens. That Friday night following a visit to the Edinburgh Christmas markets, beneath all the beautiful Christmas lights and trees of Princes Street Gardens, I got the surprise of my life when Kyle dropped on one knee, produced a diamond ring and asked me to marry him, to become his ‘Queen’, until death do us part! Following a lot of tears of shock and of course joy, I said Yes, to the perfect proposal, from my perfect guy! Kyle had gone ring shopping in Belfast visiting Lunn’s to purchase a radiant cut diamond, platinum engagement ring with a diamond band and Ruth was delighted with his choice.
Ruth and her Mum visited a few bridal boutiques to look at wedding dresses and she found ‘the one’ in Stanfield bridal, Portadown to complete her bridal ensemble Ruth and her Mum travelled to Belfast to purchase a floor length single tier veil from ‘Jean Millar bridal’ in Royal avenue this is where Ruths Mum had twenty six years previously purchased her own wedding dress making this visit was special. Ruth had two bridesmaids her cousin Kathy and best friend Lynsey who found their perfect dresses in Perfect Day, Lurgan. Kyle and his grooms party chose navy suits at McQuillns Menswear in Portadown.
The ceremony was at Thomas Street Methodist Church in Portadown where the guests were greeted by a piper, following the ceremony the guests were treated to afternoon tea in the church hall before travelling to Ballygally Castle for the wedding reception. During the speeches Kyle showed a video which he had prepared to tell the ‘couples story’ it included songs and photographs and Ruth says “not only was it a huge surprise for me but there wasn’t a girl with a dry eye left in the room!”
The Kintyre Ballroom at Ballygally Castle had been dressed by Olympus Events and included a special white LED dance floor where a surprise dance choreographed by the Father and Brother of the Bride and a close friend took place, tho Kyle and Ruth managed to not to be out done joined in and ‘picked up the moves’ very quickly almost appearing as if it had been planned all along!
Ruth and Kyle shared their first dance as husband and wife to the song ‘I Won’t let go’ by Rascall Flatts, the couple honeymooned in New York and Jamica and their advice to couples planning a wedding is “Never lose sight of the fact that it is your wedding day. Make all of your decisions together and trust that all of those who love you will support you both along the way. Don’t be afraid to take time to price around for the things you want, but don’t get yourselves stressed out about having all the added extras. Looking back you will realise, your day is what you both make it so just relax and enjoy every second of what you have spent weeks/months planning.”
