Nicky Burns a Sports Therapist from Belfast met Matthew Weir a Music Producer also from Belfast on a night out in The Empire, feeling a spark flicker between them they were then amazed to find that they had spent summer holidays together on family holidays when they were much younger. They say it is a small world, Nicky and Matt would certainly agree with that sentiment. After dating and enjoying each other’s company for over 6 years Matt decided the time was right to surprise Nicky with a romantic proposal and as the country was starting to open up again after the lockdowns a meal was planned at the opening night of Joxer in Holywood, after relishing in a sumptuous meal the loved up couple headed home where Nicky went upstairs to get their dog and came back down to find that Matt was waiting on one knee in the living room which had been adorned with flowers and champagne by their friend Pete who managed to set the scene while Nicky and Matt were out for dinner. Matt proposed while holding a stunning ring with an oval shaped diamond surrounded by smaller diamonds on a diamond band to which of course Nicky was delighted to say ‘Yes’.
Deciding to get married at Lissanoure Castle in Loughguile on 20th August 2022, Nicky and Matt went for a simplistic and classic theme of Black Tie. To complete their classic theme Nicky found the gown of her dreams at Jade Alexandra in Coleraine, after trying on a few other dresses the most perfect dress was brought out by Jade, and Nicky just fell in love with it knowing that she had found the dress of her dreams. Nicky said “Jade is just so excited for you and gets really involved in your choices, she is fantastic at helping you pick dresses to try that will really suit your shape and wants”. Choosing dresses for Bridesmaids; sister Sarah and friends Claire, Katie and Fiona went smoothly and they were bought online at ASOS.
Matt had his tux made by Patricia at ‘The Cut’ and the tux’s for brother Jonny and friends Pete, Carl, Travis and Gareth were from Bogart.
Nicky and Matt said they were very excited about spending the day with their family and friends but found it a bit stressful having to rely on other people. Their wedding day was “just perfect” for both Nicky and Matt and their 96 guests, the happy couple did manage to sneak off for five minutes while the guests were being seated to enjoy their first dance as Husband and Wife to ‘Take It With Me’ by Tom Waits, they also had a first public dance later that evening to ‘Best Part Of Me’ by Ed Sherran and Yebba. Their guests then enjoyed the rest of the evening being serenaded by the elite of the Northern Irish music scene such as: The Russian Dolls, Gareth Dunlop, Travi the Native, Wilfie Gilbert, Nathan O’Regan and The O’Hara Sisters, it certainly helped that they were all wedding guests and also that Matt is a music producer.
Reminiscing about their wonderful wedding Nicky and Matt said “the day was just perfect and they wouldn’t change a thing” even their funny moment when using Nicky’s Grandfathers antique walking cane with a hidden sword to try a champagne sabre, it didn’t work because the bottle was so cold that it wouldn’t sabre off so instead they had to pop the cork.
A highlight of the day was “after our starter we took 10 minutes to walk down to the lake, this was the first time all day we had just been by ourselves and it was just so peaceful” Nicky and Matt also gave this advice to other couples planning their wedding “Always budget for more and just remember that everyone around you is there for you, take it all in and have fun” After a gorgeous honeymoon in Biarritz, France Nicky and Matt are finding married life “amazing”.
