A Tale of Two Hearts
“True love stories never have endings.” – Richard Bach
Love can find its way through the most unexpected paths, even during the strangest times. For Lee McElveen and Roy Sipson, their love story began in the midst of a global pandemic, a testament to the fact that love knows no bounds and no obstacles. From a chance encounter on Tinder to a heartfelt proposal, their journey has been nothing short of a romantic fairytale. And now, they celebrate the beautiful blending of two families as they embark on their new adventure together.
Lee, a support worker and beautician from Armagh, and Roy, a spray painter from Banbridge, first met in November 2020. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, their dating options were limited, leading to a memorable first date at a McDonald’s drive-thru. Over coffee, parked in their cars, they chatted for hours, and a spark was undeniably ignited. “I don’t know if it was because Roy is a gentleman or maybe a bit nervous, but I had to wait until date number two for a kiss!” Lee recalls with a laugh.
Fast forward to a romantic getaway, meticulously planned by Roy. He booked a surprise night at the Titanic Hotel Belfast, raising Lee’s suspicions that a proposal might be on the horizon. Her intuition proved correct when Roy asked her to wait outside the hotel, only to call her in moments later and drop to one knee. Holding a set of exquisite white gold rings, he asked her to marry him, with “Perfect Fit” etched on the box – a phrase that perfectly encapsulated their relationship.
The staff at the Titanic Hotel added to the magic with chocolate-covered strawberries, prosecco, and balloons. Overwhelmed with joy, Lee shed happy tears, knowing she had found her soulmate. They celebrated with a night of food and dancing at Revolution de Cuba, marking the beginning of their forever.
Planning the wedding was a breeze for Lee, who found her dream dress at The Bridal Barn NI on her first visit, accompanied by her mother and mother-in-law. The joy of finding the perfect dress, combined with the support of her loved ones, made the experience unforgettable. Her bridesmaids, Aunt Heather McIlveen and sister-in-law-to-be Jodie Riddle, along with flower girl and step daughter Peyton Sipson, were styled in beautiful dresses from Oasis and H&M.
Roy and his groomsmen – best man Stephen Beck, friends Paul McCartan and son Fionn Sipson – looked dapper in outfits from Statement Menswear Portadown. The ring security team, Noah Sipson and Frankie McElveen, added a charming touch to the proceedings in their Next outfits.
The couple found invaluable help in the Facebook group Wedding Help Northern Ireland, which made planning a smooth process. Choosing the perfect wedding songs together was a highlight, allowing them to express their love through music.
On 4th May 2024, Lee and Roy tied the knot at Edenmore Golf & Country Club, surrounded by 60 of their closest friends and family. The ceremony featured a symbolic pouring of sand, representing the blending of their families and honouring loved ones who had passed.
Despite a few hiccups – a last-minute photographer change and a best man who forgot to sign the register – the day was filled with laughter and love. Two aunts accidentally attended a different golf club, missing the ceremony but arriving just in time for the bridal exit.
The reception featured a BBQ feast, a hit with all the guests. The emotional ceremony, officiated by Pastor Sammy Robinson, left a lasting impression. “The highlight of my day was the ceremony. It was beautifully delivered and very emotional,” Lee shared. Roy’s favourite moment? “When I turned around and saw you in your dress!”
Lee and Roy’s wedding day was a testament to their love and the support of their blended families. Their advice to other couples? “Do it your way, don’t try and please anyone else. It’s your big day – enjoy it!” Their honeymoon in Hersonissos, Crete, was the perfect start to their married life.
Married life, as Lee says, is simple when you’re with your best friend and soulmate. And for Lee and Roy, their journey together has only just begun, a beautiful tale of love, laughter, and the blending of two hearts and families.
