A Love Story Years in the Making
“A successful marriage requires falling in love many times,
always with the same person.” – Mignon McLaughlin
Rachael Hagan and Tiarnan O’Kane’s love story is a testament to enduring affection and friendship. Both from Derry, they met at the tender age of 14. Their friends and family saw their inevitable union long before they themselves did. It wasn’t until they completed their A-Levels that they officially became a couple, marking the beginning of a decade-long journey together. From navigating university life to landing their first jobs and buying their first home three years ago, their relationship flourished. In November 2021, Tiarnan proposed in London, with a beautifully chosen ring from Cornwall, a nod to Rachael’s family ties there.
After ten years together, Rachael and Tiarnan decided to tie the knot. Their wedding planning was a mix of excitement and ease, perfectly reflecting their relationship. Rachael found her dream dress, the Justin Alexander ‘Fiona’, at Amore Bridal Studio in Derry. Inspired by her mother’s timeless wedding gown, Rachael knew ‘Fiona’ was “the one” the moment she tried it on. Her bridal party, including future sister-in-law Tessa Callaghan, best friend Katie Scott, and cousin Sara Hagan, looked stunning in dresses from TH&TH and Monsoon.
On May 4th, 2024, Rachael and Tiarnan exchanged vows at St. Mary’s Church Drumagarner. The ceremony was graced by the elegant music of Crannagh Wedding Music, setting a timeless tone for the day. Their reception followed at The Great Hall at Galgorm, attended by 135 guests.
The couple chose a timeless and classy theme, ensuring that their wedding photos would be cherished forever. The day before the wedding, they relaxed at the Galgorm spa, making the morning of their big day serene and joyful. Everything fell into place seamlessly, thanks to the attentive staff at Galgorm who made sure every detail was perfect.
Rachael and Tiarnan’s wedding was filled with memorable moments. For Tiarnan, the highlight was seeing Rachael walk down the aisle. For Rachael, it was the heartfelt speeches that brought laughter and tears to everyone present. They danced their first dance to “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran, a meaningful choice as it was the first concert they attended together.
Their wedding planning journey was surprisingly stress-free, and they managed to stick to their budget. Rachael’s advice to other couples is simple: “Just enjoy it and don’t stress all the details. It’s about celebrating your love with all your favourite people so don’t overthink it”.
Following the wedding, Rachael and Tiarnan continued their celebrations at Galgorm before jetting off to Palma for a relaxing honeymoon. They have plans for an adventurous trip to South America next year. Married life has been a continuation of their wonderful relationship, filled with love, laughter, and the same shared dreams and goals.
Rachael and Tiarnan’s wedding was a beautiful reflection of their journey together, marked by a deep and enduring love that promises to grow even stronger with time. Their story reminds us all that true love, nurtured over the years, creates a timeless bond that can withstand anything life throws its way.
