Old Styled Love
You Had Me At Hello!
Emily King from Eglington met Marius O’Doherty from Dungiven on a night out celebrating Emily’s birthday at Granny Annie’s bar in Limavady 7 years ago. They attended the same school for five years so weren’t complete strangers when they met. You could say their meeting was the icing on top of Emily’s birthday cake.
The proposal happened while on a family holiday to Donegal with Emily’s family; Marius proposed on the beach at Downings, completely surprising Emily with a gold and sapphire ring from Sproules Jewellers in Derry. After being together for over 6 years they started planning their wedding for St Patricks Day, 17th March 2023, giving them only 7 months from the proposal in July 2022, no pressure then!
Emily went to Verona Bridal in Mahgerafelt, making an appointment the day before, Emily took her Mum with her while she tried on 6 dresses until she found ‘the one’ a Mila Nova gown. Emily told us “I loved it and was soo happy I found a dress I loved so quickly! I had a good idea of what style I was looking for which probably helped”.
Dresses for bridesmaids Samantha (sister-in-law), Michaela (cousin) and Stacy (best friend) came from Shein, they got lucky and fell in love with the first dresses that were ordered, saying they were just perfect. A dress for flower girl and daughter Amira was bespoke and handmade in Ukraine, the same as Emily’s wedding dress, bought from a company called ‘Dress Little Princesses” on Etsy.
The suits for Marius’ groomsmen Steven (best man), Christopher (cousin) and Caelan (nephew) came from Black Tie Showroom in Limavady, Marius got his suit online from Bojoni while the page boy suit for son Rio came from Children’s Salon.
The best part of planning as Emily told us was “I loved soo many aspects of it! I didn’t find it as stressful as I expected it to be, especially since we only had 7 months from when we set the date. I really loved all the dress fittings”, Emily went on to tell us the most stressful part was “Finding a band that had availability on Saint Patrick’s Day was probably the most stressful part but luckily we got one we wanted”
The wedding took place on St Patricks day in Lusty Beg Resort, Fermanagh where they had a ceremony and reception with 134 guests attending. The day couldn’t have gone any better and was everything that the couple had imagined, they told us “It was brilliant all our family and some friends being there from the night before”
Emily told us a funny story about the morning of the wedding “The groomsmen had taken a dip in the Lough the morning of the wedding. As they were drying off getting warmed up again the photographer and videographer arrived and made them do it all again – reluctantly knowing how cold it was 1st time round!”
The highlight of their day was “We both loved our ceremony. Reading our own vows and all the special personalised elements throughout filled the room with so much love and unintentionally left very few dry eyes in the room. I’ve been told I should have Provided tissues for the guests during the ceremony to wipe all the happy tears” Emily told us.
Giving this advice to other couples planning their wedding before heading off to London for their honeymoon “It’s your relationship so do it your way. Don’t sweat the small stuff – no one notices!”
They are loving married life and say it is the cherry on top for their family.
